#BookReview: A Maiden So Bewitching

by Colm Herron

Book Blurb:

From the highly-acclaimed northern Irish novelist Colm Herron comes this sad, sexy and beautiful story about a desperate Irishman called Lexie Cheddy, an only child. Lexie’s mother has always wanted a daughter so that’s how she brings him up. As a daughter. And she names him Alexis. To add to his troubles he falls on his head at the age of fourteen and a half and when he wakes up he’s a genius. (Condition known as Acquired Savant Syndrome). Lexie is now seventy-one and has long been banished to the outer reaches of the marriage bed by a wife for whom sex is but a vague and distasteful memory.

So, greatly in need of a relief valve, our hero starts up a blog site supposedly written by a teenage bisexual girl called Denise whose current squeeze is a hunk called Huncan. Result: Lexie gets to be both Denise and Huncan. This is convenient because he himself is a closet bisexual. Complications set in however when Isabella, a teenage blog reader of confused gender, asks if she can fly to Ireland to spend a romantic three-day holiday with Denise and Huncan – and Lexie impulsively accepts ….

My Review:

I loved this book from page one, although I did wonder what I was getting into. Not to worry. The author took care of me. Somehow, this book was both riveting and immensely disturbing at the same time. I’ve read books by Colm Herron before, and this author certainly knows how to deliver hard-hitting stories with incredibly true-to-life characters and situations. In A Maiden So Bewitching, we have a 71 year old male brought up as a female, who likes both sexes and is somewhat confused as well as hot-blooded enough to still be in his teens.

The situations he ends up in are both comical and heart-wrenching, and while at the start you might not like him, I promise that by the end you’ll love him and will be rooting for him, along with those who hook up with him.

I cannot recommend this book or this writer highly enough. Next on my list from this writer is Anna, only just released, which looks full of promise.

  1. Great review and this sounds like nothing I’ve ever read before. Very creative story, thanks for sharing Harmony.

  2. What an odd and original concept for a book. Like Staci, this one is a bit out of my reading genre, but it sounds like the author did a superb job with the characters, and I’m sure there are many who will gobble it up!
